On a remote Australian island in the years following World War I, lighthouse keeper Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender) and his wife, Isabel (Alicia Vikander), discover a boat washed ashore carrying a dead man and a two-month old baby. Rescuing the infant, they make the decision to raise her as their own but the consequences of their choice prove to be devastating.

Insider’s tip: “A mesmerizing, engrossing and beautifully made cinematic experience, rare as a pink unicorn, that enchants for more than two hours and makes you wish for at least one hour more” (Rex Reed, New York Observer). Ty Burr of the Boston Globe adds: “A sweeping romantic period drama, heavy with themes of love and duty and fate, lifted up by cinematic craft and great performances.” John Anderson, Wall Street Journal: “Everything in The Light Between Oceans is deeply felt and dramatically precise, in a way that seems destined to become profoundly personal for each and every viewer.”
