A Haunting in Venice is set in eerie, post-World War II Venice on All Hallows’ Eve.  Hercule Poirot (Kenneth Branagh), now retired and living in self-imposed exile, reluctantly attends a seance at a decaying, haunted palazzo.  When one of the guests is murdered, the former detective is thrust into a sinister world of shadows and secrets.  Based upon the novel Hallowe’en Party by Agatha Christie.

Starring:  Amir El-Masry, Camille Cottin, Emma Laird, Jamie Dornan, Jude Hill, Kelly Reilly, Kenneth Branagh, Kyle Allen, Michelle Yeoh, Riccardo Scamarcio, Tina Fey

Venice, if nothing else, is a pleasant reminder that stories can be spooky without aiming for hard scares.  Sometimes, the vibes of Halloween can feel like an all-or-nothing proposition, but for us scaredycats, sometimes it’s nice to just enjoy autumnal vibes with just a hint of terror in the air, like the first whiff of wood smoke while walking through your hometown on a brisk October day.”  (Liz Shannon Miller, Consequence)

A Haunting in Venice is the best of Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot movies.  It’s also one of his best, period, thanks to the way Branagh and screenwriter Michael Green respectfully adapt the source material (Agatha Christie’s Hallowe’en Party) while at the same time treating it as a chance to make a relentlessly clever and visually dense “old” movie that uses the latest technology.”  (Matt Zoller Seitz, RogerEbert.com)
