Based on Kenneth Slawenski’s book, J. D. Salinger: A Life, set amidst the colorful backdrop of mid-20th century New York City, Rebel in the Rye follows a young Salinger (Nicholas Hoult) as he struggles early-on as a writer longing to be heard, pursues a love affair with famed socialite Oona O’Neill (Zoey Deutch), and fights on the frontlines of World War II, landing on Utah Beach on D-Day. It’s these experiences that will inform the creation of his masterpiece, The Catcher in the Rye, bringing him overnight fame (and notoriety) and leading him to withdraw from the public eye for the rest of his life.

Insider’s tip: “The journey of J.D. Salinger from young wiseacre to world-celebrated author and notorious recluse is absorbingly traced in Danny Strong’s Rebel in the Rye” (Gary Goldstein, Los Angeles Times). Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times, adds: “With Rebel in the Rye, we get a solid, well-acted and basically standard biopic.” Tony Medley, Tolucan Times: “The recreation of New York, the Stork Club, and the dress of those years is excellent, as are all the performances. Writer-director Danny Strong has created a compelling portrait of the elusive Salinger that had me mesmerized.”
