Summer Arts Festival July 5 - October 11, 2003

Saturday, July 5 – ODETTA – A legendary blues/folksinger, one of the most influential music pioneers of the 20th Century, accompanied by Seth Farber on piano. 8:00 p.m.

Tuesday, July 8 – THE MICKEY & JUDY SHOW – Jeff Harnar, star of two PBS specials, and Shauna Hicks, Linda in Blood Brothers, accompanied by James Followell on piano, in a star-spangled salute to the movie music of Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland. 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, July 12 – AN EVENING WITH Elisabeth von Trapp – This singer/songwriter applies her luminescent voice to the music of Gregorian chant, Richard Rodgers, country, and contemporary folk. 8:00 p.m.

Tuesday, July 15 – THE DOROTHY FIELDS SONGBOOK – Sally Mayes, Ilona in the Roundabout Theatre revival and the Broadway production of She Loves Me, with Johnny Rodgers on piano, in a celebration of the five-decade career of one of America’s most prolific lyricists. 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, July 19 – MHCA GARDEN TOUR – The Art of Flower Arranging – A special benefit for MHCA.  Visit some of the Valley's most beautiful gardens, featuring an artful display by area florists of the flowers in each individual garden.   9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Thursday, Friday, Saturday, & Monday, July 17, 18, 19 & 21 – The Deerfield Valley Players present Gypsy, a classic Broadway musical based on the formative years of Gypsy Rose Lee. 8:00 p.m.

Tuesday, July 22 – Try to Remember: A Look Back at Off-Broadway – Rita Gardner, the original Luisa in The Fantasticks, accompanied by Alex Rybeck on piano, in a cabaret act of song and comedy. 7:30 p.m.

Friday & Saturday, July 25 & 26 – The Deerfield Valley Players present Gypsy, a classic Broadway musical based on the formative years of Gypsy Rose Lee. 8:00 p.m.

Monday, July 28 – THE HIGH ROAD – Howard Wooden, Tom MacKenzie, and Pete Sutherland present a diverse mix of Gaelic, mountain, and bluegrass. 8:00 p.m.

Tuesday, July 29 – FINISHING THE ACT– Craig Rubano, Marius in Les Miserables on Broadway, sings great hits from Broadway musicals. Alex Rybeck on piano. 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, August 2 – VILLAGE LIGHT OPERA GROUP – Sixty accomplished NYC vocalists present Broadway standards, light opera favorites, and well-known songs from Gilbert and Sullivan. A tradition in the Deerfield Valley, this special concert benefits MHCA. 8:00 p.m.

Tuesday, August 5 – A TRIBUTE TO ELLA – Perley Rousseau, vocals, Sonny Daye, piano, Pete Toigo, bass, and Ted MacKensie, drums, in an intimate evening highlighting the music of Ella Fitzgerald.  7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, August 6 – THE ART OF FLOWER ARRANGING – Workshop and luncheon at the Old Red Mill Restaurant, Wilmington.  Instruction by Sheila Osler and Lacey Colmore.  A special benefit for MHCA.  11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Saturday, August 9 – THE VERMONT JAZZ ENSEMBLE – The Big Band Era Returns, Again! – This 17-piece big band plays songs made popular by Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Maynard Ferguson and more. 8:00 p.m.

Tuesday, August 12 – Skip Parsons’ Riverboat Dixieland Jazz Band – This seven-piece band has won national and international recognition. 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, August 16 – SARAH LEE GUTHRIE & JOHNNY IRION – Acclaimed singer/songwriters in an evening of folk, country and bluegrass. 8:00 p.m.

Monday, August 18 – JUST THE BLUES – Chris Kleeman, accomplished blues singer, based in the Green Mountains of southern Vermont, presents it all from the Delta to Chicago. 8:00 p.m.

Tuesday, August 19 – SALTARELLO – Sarah Cantor, recorders, Angus Lansing, viola da gamba, and Henry Lebedinsky, harpsichord, present a musical tour of Europe through the 17th and 18th centuries. 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, August 23 – AUGUST DULCIMER DAZE – An MHCA favorite, featuring this traditional folk instrument with The Margaret MacArthur Family, Maddie MacNeil, Pam Weeks, Jon Kay, and other accomplished performers. 8:00 p.m. Call Folk Craft Music (802-368-7437) for information about companion weekend workshops.

Tuesday, August 26 – PEGGY HAYES & THE BOB MERRILL QUINTET – Swing, Blues and much more Jazz! – Peggy Hayes, jazz vocalist, Bob Merrill, piano and vocals, George Kaye, bass, Paul Bourgelais, guitar, Terry Langford, saxophone/clarinet, and Tim Gilmore, drums. 7:30 p.m.

Thursday, August 28 – THE POETIC PIANO – Diana Fanning, a pianist of international renown, presents works of Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, and Debussy.  7:30 p.m.

Saturday, August 30 – LIVINGSTON TAYLOR – The singer/songwriter/musician, professor, and author with a warm, witty, entertaining charm. 8:00 p.m. – A singer/songwriter/musician, professor, and author with a warm, witty, entertaining charm. 8:00 p.m.

Sunday, August 31 - Fifth Annual SILENT FILM FESTIVAL – A series of comedy shorts. 8:00 p.m.

Saturday, September 27 – SKIP PARSONS’ JAZZ TRIO – Featuring clarinet, tuba, and banjo, this trio will relive the early jazz of the New Orleans and Chicago styles, as exemplified by such greats as Jelly Roll Morton and Louis Armstrong. 8:00 p.m.

Saturday, October 4 – THE STOCKWELL BROTHERS – Bruce, Barry, and Alan, in an evening of traditional bluegrass and their own blend of folk "newgrass." 8:00 p.m.

Saturday, October 11 – SCOTT AINSLIE – The Blues singer, historian, and extraordinary guitarist whose style is distinguished by fiery picking and slide work. Author of the best-selling, Robert Johnson: At the Crossroads. 8:00 p.m.
