SATURDAY, JULY 3 – ROCKY MOUNTAIN MEMORIES / A TRIBUTE to JOHN DENVER – Ron Rich, whose talent in re-creating the sound of John Denver is evident throughout this show of his creation that has toured the U.S., and who has recently returned from touring in New Zealand with the “Whisper the Wind” tribute to John Denver, presents an evening in celebration of the life of one of America’s most favorite singer/songwriter artists, Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr.   “Rocky Mountain High,” “Annie’s Song,” “Poems, Prayers, and Promises,” “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” “Sunshine on My Shoulders,” “Thank God I’m a Country Boy”  are just some of the treasures of the evening.    7:00 p.m.

TUESDAY, JULY 6 – ARTIE SHAW ORCHESTRA – On the eve of America's entry into World War II, TIME magazine reported that, to the German masses, the United States meant “sky-scrapers, Clark Gable, and Artie Shaw."   “Begin the Beguine,” “Moonglow,”  “Stardust,”  “S’Wonderful,” “Night and Day,”  “Deep Purple,” “The Continental,” and “I Get a Kick Out of You”  are just a part of this evening’s presentation that will also include covers of other Big Band “standards” that helped the “greatest generation” through the war years.    Sixteen-piece orchestra and a female vocalist.    7:30 p.m.  

SATURDAY, JULY 10 – LISA McCORMICK & FRIENDS – A showcase evening of some of Vermont’s foremost singer/songwriters, featuring Lisa McCormick on acoustic guitar and vocals.   Also performing are singer/songwriters Leon Cooper and Thomas Anderson, with special guests Julian McBrowne, on bass, and Sabine Rhyne, on cello.  This is contemporary acoustic folk/pop at its Vermont best.    8:00 p.m.

TUESDAY, JULY 13 – ON BROADWAY – CAROLYN BLACK, whose PBS television special, “By George! By Ira! By Gershwin!,” was an evening to remember last season at Memorial Hall Center for the Arts, returns to lead you on a fabulous tour of the Great White Way, in celebration of Broadway’s best and brightest:  Berlin, George and Ira Gershwin, Kern, Porter, Rodgers & Hammerstein & Hart, Kander and Ebb, Lerner and Lowe, and Andrew Lloyd Webber.  “Let’s Face the Music and Dance,”  “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina,” and “Come to My Garden” are a few of the gems of the evening.  “A voice that is absolutely beautiful!”--Neil Diamond.    Piano accompaniment.   7:30 p.m. 

SATURDAY, JULY 17 – VILLAGE LIGHT OPERA GROUP – Sixty accomplished NYC vocalists present Broadway standards, light opera favorites, and well-known songs from Gilbert and Sullivan.  A tradition in the Deerfield Valley, this special concert benefits MHCA and Village Light Opera Group.   Piano accompaniment.   8:00 p.m.   

TUESDAY, JULY 20 – MY HEART STOOD STILL: The Love Songs of Richard Rodgers – ANNA BERGMAN premiered this show for Feinstein’s at Loews Regency in New York City in 2008 to critical acclaim.  Returning to Memorial Hall Center for the Arts after a six year hiatus, Anna, in this show, a tribute to the marriage of the exquisite melodies of Rodgers to the lyrics of his partners, Lorenz Hart and Oscar Hammerstein, as well as his collaborations with Charnin and Sondheim, will absolutely charm you with her beauty, grace and voice.  “Something Wonderful,” “Bewitched,” and “Do I Hear a Waltz” are some of the evening’s joys.   Piano accompaniment.   7:30 p.m.  

SATURDAY, JULY 24 – Memorial Hall Center for the Arts BENEFIT GARDEN GALA – Hors d’oeuvres, champagne/wine, and music – In a spectacular garden featuring a large variety of shade plantings, waterfalls, grasses and creatively placed sculptures, enjoy scrumptious hors d’oeuvres while sipping champagne or wine, and take a seat near the gazebo which becomes a stage for a program featuring local singers and musicians. This special benefit for MHCA begins at: 5:00 p.m. and ends at 7:30 p.m.   Rain date: July 25.

TUESDAY, JULY 27 – BIRD AND THE B’s - The music of Charlie Parker (Bird), Dave Brubeck, Count Basie, Irving Berlin, and other famous B’s –  An evening in tribute to the popular works of these masters of their time, whose name begins with “B”.   Phyllis Isaacson on piano, with bass, drums, woodwinds, and vocalist.    7:30 p.m.  

 

THURSDAY, FRIDAY, SATURDAY, July 29, 30, 31  –  HARVEY – The Southern Vermont Players perform this whimsical play about an affable man, Elwood P. Dowd, whose best friend just happens to be a six-foot, three-inch tall rabbit, presumed to be imaginary by all but Elwood.  Opening on Broadway in 1944, HARVEY played for 1775 performances, closing on January 15, 1949.  Mary Chase, the author, won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for this work in 1945.  Subsequently, the play was adapted for film, and, in 1950, starred James Stewart and Josephine Hull in the format that continues to endear this play to audiences of all ages throughout the world.   The Southern Vermont Players will be directed by Bob DuCharme.    8:00 p.m. 

TUESDAY, AUGUST 3 – BENJAMIN HOCHMANInternationally-acclaimed pianist, who has participated in  Marlboro Music Festival in the past and who is looking forward this year to his Carnegie Hall debut, in an evening of solo piano.   Selections from Mozart, Debussy, Schumann, and Chopin.   7:30 p.m.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 10 – BRAZILIAN ROMANCE – The Bossa Nova Phenomenon –  Sonny and Perley – A captivating evening devoted to the sultry romance and mesmerizing rhythm of Bossa Nova and in tribute to the composer Antonio Carlos Jobim, with Brazilian guitarist, Jason Ennis, bassist, Lew Scott, and percussionist, Conor Mehan.   Piano accompaniment.   7:30 p.m.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 17 – THE MILLS BROTHERS with JOHN MILLS and ELMER HOPPER and Trio – As seen on PBS in 2008, John Mills, the son, grandson, and nephew of the original group’s members, together with Elmer Hopper, a 21-year veteran of the renowned Platters, recreate the inimitable sound of the The Mills Brothers in the original keys and to the original scores.  “Glow Worm,” “Basin Street Blues,” and “Paper Doll” are a few of the timeless memories that for 75 years captivated audiences worldwide.    7:30 p.m.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 21 – AUGUST DULCIMER DAZE – An MHCA favorite, featuring this traditional folk instrument with Rob Brereton, Thomasina, and The MacArthur Family of Marlboro.   8:00 p.m.     Call Folk Craft Music (802-368-7437) for information about companion weekend workshops.   

TUESDAY, AUGUST 24 – GOTTA SING! GOTTA DANCE! Songs and Tales from a Life on Broadway – LEE ROY REAMS, who was nominated for both the Tony and Drama Desk Awards as Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his performance in the original production of 42nd Street in 1980, presents an evening of song and anecdote from a number of his ten Broadway shows: Sweet Charity, Oklahoma!, Applause, Hello, Dolly!, Lorelei, 42nd Street, and more…   Piano accompaniment.   7:30 p.m.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 28 – AN EVENING with ALKI – Alki Steriopoulos, having brought evenings in tribute to Hoagy Carmichael, Nat King Cole, and Duke Ellington to Memorial Hall Center for the Arts to most appreciative audiences in the past, tonight presents an evening of his own, performing a potpourri of jazz, latin, standards, as well as original compositions, on the concert grand, with the artistic flair for which he is well-known.   8:00 p.m.  

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 4 – RAGDOLL – A Tribute to Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons – A spectacular stage presence and sound aptly describes this tribute to one of the greatest groups of the 60’s and 70’s.  “Save It For Me,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Sherry,” “Let’s Hang On,” “Big Man in Town,” “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” “Candy Girl,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Working My Way Back to You,” and many more #1 hits.  Eight men on stage with three horns, two guitars, keyboard, drums and four vocalists.   8:00 p.m.
